Dr Rinu Ann Sebastian

Rinu’s PhD explored improving safety at construction sites using Computer Vision/Deep Learning at the University of Melbourne.

She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Engineering from her home country, India, and holds a Master’s degree in Computer Science from the University of Melbourne.

Rinu’s main research interests include Computer Vision, AI, and Deep Learning. Her PhD research aims to develop structured object detection models that can be used along with machine learning algorithms to detect the presence of personal protective equipment (PPE) on construction workers. It aims to boost model performance and rectify shortcomings of existing models like poor generalisability, the need for large training datasets and the inability to use contextual knowledge. It will also examine any ethical issues that might arise from using automatic PPE detection models.

PhD Start and End Dates
Rinu received her PhD in 2026. She is working as a Researcher at the University of Melbourne.
