Digital and Automated Fabrication (Robotics) Dr Chao Chen
Chao is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Monash University. He established and leads the Laboratory of Motion Generation and Analysis (LMGA), where the research activities include medical robotics, agricultural robots and infrastructure robots. The research focuses are on the design of robots and mechanisms, dynamics and control, path planning, and reinforced learning. He is also an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Chao has been involved intensively in joint research and development projects with industrial partners. The robotic systems developed by his group include a Robotic Transverse Profiler (2016) – Australia’s first fully autonomous road pavement inspection robot that revolutionised relevant work procedures; a 3D Printed Prosthetic Hand, which won the 2017 Award by Australian Hand Therapy Association; and, an Apple Harvesting Robot exhibited in 2019 Global AI Product and Application EXPO. Chao has made significant contributions in robotics, and with his expertise in design, analysis and control of robots, and AI-enhanced robotics, he will continue to develop innovative robotic systems that are firmly aligned with Building 4.0 CRC’s targets.
