Building 4.0 CRC welcomes Australian Government investment into kit-of-parts housing initiative

Building 4.0 CRC welcomed the Australian Government’s announcement of new investment supporting the development of a national “kit-of-parts” approach to housing delivery.

The initiative represents an important step towards modernising how housing is delivered across Australia through improved coordination, repeatable building systems, modern manufacturing and scalable supply chains.

Building 4.0 CRC CEO Professor Mathew Aitchison said the announcement recognised the importance of long-term system reform across the housing and construction sector.

“For many years, Building 4.0 CRC has worked alongside Homes NSW, industry and research partners to explore practical ways to improve housing delivery in Australia,” Professor Aitchison said.

“Construction costs have continued to rise while productivity has declined. If we want to build more homes efficiently over time, we need to modernise how housing is delivered.”

“The kit-of-parts approach is about creating more repeatable and coordinated systems that can support quality housing delivery at a greater scale.”

Professor Aitchison said the work focused on improving systems and capability rather than creating identical housing outcomes.

“This is not about standard homes. It is about creating smarter systems, products and processes that allow governments and industry to deliver housing more efficiently while still supporting diverse local housing outcomes,” he said.

Building 4.0 CRC will continue working with governments, industry and research partners to support further development, testing and implementation of the initiative.

Registering your interest in System 600

We are encouraged by the strong level of interest in System 600 and the kit-of-parts approach since Minister O’Neil’s announcement, demonstrating the significant appetite to contribute to the future of industrialised construction and housing delivery in Australia.

Reflecting this level of interest, we are undertaking additional work to ensure all interested parties are appropriately registered and incorporated into future engagement activities.

To help us maintain accurate records and ensure you receive relevant updates and opportunities as they arise, please complete the registration form.

System 600 is seeking manufacturers, suppliers and technology providers whose products support a more industrialised approach to construction. We are particularly interested in solutions that reduce onsite labour, minimise wet trades and hot works, simplify installation, reduce reliance on specialist skills and avoid complex trade coordination. Preference is given to products and systems that can be manufactured in repeatable batches, assembled using straightforward and efficient installation processes, and integrated through standardised interfaces without requiring project-specific redesign, site measurement or extensive customisation.
